it has been 5 years since we lost our beloved boy to cancer ...
i still see him out of the corners of my eyes, dashing around the pond,
full of the sheer joy he always had when he ran 'full out' ... we miss this dear boy

Nov 1998 - Aug 2003
the times that we had were far, far, far too short

Thanks to Joni Barnhardt, Patty Powell, and Betty Mitchell for sharing this lovely boy with us.
We are grateful for each and every day we shared with this marvelous boy.

Hugo earned his AKC Championship
with points from the puppy class handled by Patty Powell
and points from Open handled by Joni Barnhardt & Marti
his majors were on the Tarheel with the Mammanos
and in Greenville with Jim Rathbun

He only needed 1 more hike to complete his Working Pack Dog title, and we had a date set, Sept. 13, for his CGC test.   Hugo was a truly sweet and obedient siberian who was a joy to live with. He loved to work obedience and just smiled and smiled when he 'got it right' because he KNEW he was a 'good boy'.  Hugo was slated to go out with Ashley Heinz for Total Junior competition in 2004 in conformation and Weight Pull.  We looked forward to his UWP and UCH titles.

We were particularly proud of his obedient and sweet temperament, his correct moderate size, his movement, and his SOUNDNESS.

Hugo was one of the first 5 Siberian Males in USA to earn CHIC recognition.

All of us who knew and loved Hugo are devastated by his loss to cancer at such an early age.  He died days before our appointment to collect and freeze his semen.  His Champion Litter Sister, FRAN, is with his breeder, Joni, at Khovaki.

Hugo's best buddy was Lyndhurst Jessica, and together they lived and played.  We called them The Odd Couple.  Sadly, Hugo was preceded in death by Jessica, who succumbed to acute kidney failure just 10 days before Hugo lost his battle with cancer.  At the time we didn't understand her death.  We know now that she had gone ahead, to lie in wait for Hugo to cross the Rainbow Bridge, to pounce on him as he tried to race by.  They are buried together, in the meadow beside the pond, where no doubt their spirits romp and play together.  Our trail of tears will lead you to their grave.

Note Dec 2004:  Time has not lessened our sense of loss.  We still mourn for our beloved Hugo,
"Hello, my name is Hugh, How do you do?" was the smiling face with which he always greeted us.
Those of you from Charlotte will recognize his Hugh McManaway poem.
